This winter, I suddenly developed a desperate longing for a peacock blue jacket to wear with my… well, whatever a brown wool pirate coat doesn’t go with, on chilly days. I’m planning to use the pattern in The Tudor Tailor, and some teal cotton velvet curtain panels I found at World Market.
I’m currently trying to track down period image resources. Finding lots of embroidered Jacobean jackets, but not so many plain ones. The above is from a portrait of the 17th century nun Mary Ward (we’re interested here in the young woman in blue; I believe I may have actually cropped the poor devout Mary herself out of the image–she was praying before a crucifix in the background). Anyway, it’s also just a lovely picture of women at their needlework, isn’t it?
